NATALIE PORTMAN REFLECTS ON THE ROLE OF AVENGERS: ENDGAME – MCU star Natalie Portman shares her thoughts about her small role in Avengers: Endgame. Portman originated the character of Jane Foster in the early 2011 MCU entry Thor. Foster is a talented astrophysicist and the main love interest of Asgardian protagonist Thor (Chris Hemsworth) throughout the franchise. Although the character holds an important position in the Marvel canon, he hasn’t made many appearances in the franchise since the Phase 2 film Thor: The Dark World. Recently, Portman appeared in the MCU in the animated series What If…? This saw him return as Mighty Thor in Thor: Love and Thunder, which hit theaters on July 8.

Jane Foster’s latest appearance at the MCU is the huge crossover hit Avengers: Endgame. He appeared during a sequence where the Avengers traveled back in time to collect the Infinity Stones from the timeline of previous entries in the MCU. As part of that mission, Rocket and Thor visited Asgard in 2013 to collect the Reality Stone from Foster during the events of Thor: The Dark World. Although Portman’s likeness was used, it was largely compiled through footage cuts from The Dark World, with the actress’s only new contribution being additional voiceover material for scenes from Avengers: Endgame.

Portman recently sat down with Variety to talk about Thor: Love and Thunder and its history in the MCU. Discussing Jane Foster’s appearance in Endgame, she revealed that “it was really easy on me” before laughing. In the MCU, it’s common for actors to see themselves on screen in settings and situations they didn’t experience on set, so it wasn’t unusual for them to see themselves in that context.

Natalie Portman’s statements about appearing as an actor in some Marvel movies are in line with the experiences of other actors. Given the intersecting production schedule and the fact that most sets have green screens, it can sometimes be difficult to tell how and where one appears. The process led to an infamous moment where Pepper Potts actress Gwyneth Paltrow forgot she was in Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Watching Avengers: Endgame for the first time could certainly have been distracting for him. However, that role must have been the catalyst that started his return to the MCU. Now that Jane is honestly getting back in the fold, there will still be instances where she didn’t know what the scene would be like beforehand, but at least she’s a lot more directly involved in the process.
